Pilaitės Football Stadium - the Dome
Pilaitės Football Stadium - the Dome, an exclusive, completely renovated football arena, has opened in Pilaitė. The renovated stadium features an inflatable dome, which will allow young football talents, Pilaitė gymnasium students and the local community to play football and do athletics all year round.
During the cold season, the inflated dome will turn the sports field into the "Pilaitės" football stadium. The unique 110-metre long, 70-metre wide and 19-metre high dome will allow athletes to train all year round. The dome will be inflated before each winter season and deflated in spring. Modular changing rooms with showers have been built next to the arena, and the basketball court and athletics area have been renovated outside.
Vilnius Deputy Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said that the Pilaitės Football Stadium uses new technologies in Vilnius' sports infrastructure. If the project is successful, similar covered stadiums would be built near other schools in the capital.
"Today we are opening a sports stadium that stands out not only in terms of its design, but also in terms of its high-quality infrastructure. The Pilaitės Gymnasium pupils will use the sports arena, the pupils of the capital's football schools will train there after school, and the neighbourhood community will be able to play sports at other times," said Valdas Benkunskas, Deputy Mayor of Vilnius.
The reconstruction of the Pilaitė football ground cost EUR 2.25 million. The Vilnius City Municipality contributed EUR 1.5 million to the project, while the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport contributed EUR 0.6 million. The Lithuanian Football Federation donated a pitch surface worth approximately EUR 150 000.
